The Nobel Peace Prize and 'banker of the poor' Muhammad Yunus has appeared in court today as part of a 'Inquiry on yogurt produced by his bank, Grameen Bank, in partnership with the French giant Danone. The investigation arose from a complaint presented by the city of Dacca, stating that yogurt 'Shakti Doi would be detrimental to health.
"After (receiving) a call, I showed up today and was released on bail and are exempted from new audiences," Yunus told the press. Danone and Grameen Bank each hold 50% local company that produces food for poor consumers. For the lawyer of the Nobel Prize, this case is "baseless" and allegations that the yogurt will endanger public health "are false."
Yunus was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for having given access to microcredit to the poorest. The Nobel Prize has been brought before the also court last week for a complaint for defamation filed against him in 2007, some of his statements on politics in Bangladesh.
The 'banker to the poor' is also the focus of an investigation initiated by the government in Dhaka, Yunus after he was accused of embezzling funds to his Grameen Bank to transfer to another project. The last two surveys have fueled the suspicions, denied by the government that the legal problems of Yunus are related to differences with Prime Minister Sheikh Hassina.
